About Us

On December 7th, 2023, National Cotton Candy Day, Spun Out Public Benefit Corporation was born!

Spun Out is a new Public Benefit Corporation, founded in Denver, Colorado, that will offer fairy floss, records, and other Spun Out Fun.

The venture is helmed by Nick Phillips, known as Captain Phillips in some circles (despite growing up landlocked a mile above sea level and only having a summer's worth of lake sailing experience), alongside his trusty partner, the Floss Boss, a Flosstrich puppet in-progress. The two will be taking to the streets of Denver in the Spun Out House, a mobile food trailer, to spin out fairy floss, which many know as cotton candy, amongst other confectionaries and beverages. All while listening to spun out tunes and tales!

Ready to get Spun Out with us? It gets even better. We are a public benefit corporation which is a for-profit business that is intended to produce one or more public benefits and to operate in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The purposes of Spun Out Public Benefit Corporation are to provide empowering employment opportunities creating transformational offerings, in a sustainable and responsible manner, with a third of profits supporting harm reduction, mental health, a culture of consent, & positive activism for a better tomorrow.

Let’s break that down.

‘Provide empowering employment opportunities’

At Spun Out we aim to inspire those that work with us to share their light with the world while finding a way to give back to the causes that are important to them. Working with Spun Out gives individuals a chance to learn about entrepreneurism while also providing a public benefit to the communities they largely engage with.

‘Creating transformational offerings’

We are making more than fairy floss, we are bringing a vision into a reality and in doing so showing others that it’s possible to forge your own way. The term ‘transformational’ relates to the ideas presented by Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore in their book the Experience Economy and its follow up Authenticity. It speaks to the revolution of economies from commodities, to goods, then services, leading to the experience economy where individuals seek engaging experiences. According to the authors, “an experience occurs when a company intentionally uses services as the stage, and goods as props, to engage individual customers in a way that creates a memorable event.” In the Transformation Economy, consumers are searching for more from their experience and are willing to pay for experiences that could potentially change the way that they live, work, and play. At Spun Out we want to guide others to self-actualization by leading by example amd pursuing our best selves as individuals, puppet, and business as a whole.

‘In a sustainable and responsible manner’

At Spun Out we aim to set the standard for sustainable and responsible practices, while staying transparent along our path. The Fairy powder we so heavily rely on for our operation, traditionally comes from sugarcane which is the most produced crop in the world. It is also an extremely water intensive process to grow the sugarcane and refine it into sugar and the demand for the crop has led to deforestation and the displacement of indigenous people where it is grown. For these reasons we are exploring alternative sugars for our fairy floss.

‘With a third of profits supporting harm reduction, mental health, a culture of consent, & positive activism for a better tomorrow’

In a world where it’s easy to be pitted against issues, Spun Out seeks to stand for the things we believe in by showing our support to causes that are important to the community. In addition to providing financial support from our sales to nonprofits operating in harm reduction, mental health, a culture of consent, & positive activism for a better tomorrow, we will also seek to be a source of information related to these topics and where further resources are available. ‘Spun out’ is not always a positive thing and though the name is a play on psychedelic use and the physical act of sugar being heated and spun out of a machine, and records literally being spun on a player, we do want to be supportive of those that may be struggling with addiction or mental health problems.

We look forward to growing with you.

“Inspire others by modeling how YOU pursue your best self and positively act, TODAY, for a brighter more beautiful tomorrow” ~ Nick Phillips
